Dutch King Willem-Alexander has urged President William Ruto’s administration to respect human rights and uphold accountability, even as the two nations signed critical agreements aimed at boosting trade, agriculture, and tourism. The monarch, on a three-day State visit, stressed that Kenyans "want their rights as free citizens to be respected," underscoring rising global attention on Kenya’s governance record.

During a discussion at the Netherlands Embassy, King Willem-Alexander engaged young Kenyans on issues of human rights, good governance, and accountability. His comments come at a time when Kenyan authorities face scrutiny over alleged police brutality and disappearances linked to anti-government protests. Official data shows that 29 people remain missing since demonstrations began in June last year, raising fresh concerns about the country’s human rights climate.

Despite these concerns, the State visit yielded significant outcomes, with President Ruto and the Dutch King signing three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focused on strengthening bilateral ties in key sectors. Observers note that while the agreements signal Kenya’s commitment to economic growth, the King’s strong stance on human rights highlights a growing international call for the Ruto administration to address systemic issues at home.
