Govt Declares April 31st a Public Holiday—But There's a Catch!
By EOK News Team
Kenyans were caught off guard on Tuesday morning after the government announced a brand-new public holiday to be observed on April 31st each year. Dubbed National Relaxation Day, the holiday was declared through a gazette notice aimed at giving hardworking Kenyans a day to unwind and reflect.
"The Government of the Republic of Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to the welfare and well-being of its citizens. In appreciation of the industrious spirit of the Kenyan people, it is deemed expedient to declare an additional public holiday as a measure to enhance national productivity and socio-economic well-being," the notice read.
A top government official confirmed that all businesses and government offices would be required to observe the holiday by shutting down operations for the day.
However, the announcement quickly sparked confusion. Many Kenyans pointed out that April only has 30 days, raising the question: How can a holiday be scheduled on a non-existent date?
Confusion & Reactions
Some organizations, including the Kenya National Welfare Chamber (KNWC), welcomed the move, saying it would boost local tourism and give workers a well-deserved break.
"This holiday was long overdue. Many Kenyans complain that they never get time off work. If anything, we expect more people to take advantage and explore our local tourism sites," said a KNWC representative.
A quick spot-check by EOK News revealed that some businesses had already started making plans for the holiday. Hotels began advertising special offers for April 31, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the date doesn’t exist!
Government Responds
Asked about the date confusion, the Interior Cabinet Secretary assured Kenyans that the "logistics" of the holiday would be sorted out before its first observance. However, this response only fueled skepticism, with many Kenyans suspecting they had just fallen for the biggest April Fools' prank of 2025!
As the news spread, social media erupted with jokes and memes about the phantom holiday. Some Kenyans joked that if April 31st is now a public holiday, then February 30th should also be declared a day off!
