Ex-Bungoma Governor Wangamati Grilled Over Sh70M Road Tender Scandal

Former Bungoma Governor, Wycliffe Wangamati

Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati is under renewed scrutiny after he appeared before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Friday to respond to allegations of misappropriation of public funds during his tenure.

Wangamati, who served as Governor from 2017 to 2022, is accused of irregularly awarding Ksh.70 million worth of road construction tenders to companies allegedly linked to him and his five brothers. The tenders were reportedly issued between the 2017/18 and 2021/22 financial years.

He recorded a statement at EACC’s regional office in Bungoma, marking a key step in the ongoing investigation.

“The outcome of the investigation will inform appropriate action, which may include criminal prosecution of any persons found culpable and recovery of lost public funds,” EACC stated.

Also under investigation is Webuye West MP Daniel Wanyama, who reportedly recorded his statement earlier at the EACC headquarters in Nairobi on April 1, 2025.

The probe is expected to shed light on the growing concerns over the misuse of devolved funds and the entrenchment of nepotism in public procurement processes in county governments.
