In a historic diplomatic and economic engagement, Kenya and China have reaffirmed their strategic partnership as President William Ruto and President Xi Jinping presided over the signing of 20 major trade agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Described as "permanent, people-centered, and transformative," the bilateral partnership promises tangible, practical, and sustainable results, aligning closely with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

"These agreements are a demonstration of our shared commitment to economic growth, job creation, and unlocking Kenya’s full potential," President Ruto stated after the signing ceremony.

Key Sectors to Benefit

Under the new frameworks, China will channel substantial investment into Kenya’s:

  • Road and transport infrastructure
  • Agriculture and food security
  • Education and health systems
  • Blue economy and green energy
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

These strategic investments aim to create job opportunities for Kenyan youth, improve service delivery, and strengthen bilateral trade.

"This partnership is not about promises—it’s about delivery. It’s about lifting people from poverty, enabling innovation, and positioning Kenya as a continental leader," President Ruto noted.

A Global South Agenda

Beyond bilateral trade, both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation among countries in the Global South, advancing a shared vision for equitable global governance.

“We will continue to advocate for the reform of the United Nations Security Council to ensure it is representative and responsive to today’s realities,” President Ruto emphasized.

President Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to Kenya’s development, describing the East African country as a “trustworthy friend and key partner in Africa’s progress.”
