Winnie Majani Defends Ex-DG’s Firewood Hustle: "There’s Dignity in Honest Work"

Hon. Winnie Majani//Hon. Calen Amaswache

Vihiga Woman Representative hopeful, Hon. Winnie Majani, has come out strongly in defense of former Deputy Governor Hon. Calen Temba Amaswache following public chatter about his involvement in the firewood business.

In a bold and inspiring statement, Majani challenged the stigma surrounding small-scale ventures and manual labor, noting that no job should be demeaned — especially one that is honest and potentially lucrative.

“I think it is wrong conditioning to insinuate that a former Deputy Governor selling firewood is a state of grace to grass. What’s wrong with the firewood business? Isn’t it a legit and lucrative business?” she asked.

Majani, who is positioning herself as a champion of grassroots empowerment under the banner #UsawaMashinani, applauded Hon. Amaswache for exploring entrepreneurship beyond the traditional confines of a political office. She added that economic freedom is relative and that dignity lies not in titles, but in the pursuit of self-sufficiency and service.

“Freedom lies in self-employment such as being a farmer, boda rider, cobbler, plumber, mechanic, advocate, salonist, architect, and yes — even a firewood dealer like Hon. Calen Temba Amaswache.”

She further urged Hon. Amaswache to expand his clientele and brand, boldly predicting that such efforts could see him become a future political sponsor, or even a kingmaker in regional politics.

“Dear Hon. Temba, widen your clientele base and work further on your brand. You will be among those sponsoring future DG candidates — or even their bosses.”

The message is clear: hustling is not a fall from grace, but a symbol of resilience and the true spirit of Wanjiku. In a nation where unemployment and economic hardship are rampant, Hon. Majani’s words come as a powerful reminder that success wears many faces.
