WETANG’ULA UNVEILS SH8 BILLION LEVEL SIX HOSPITAL PLAN FOR BUNGOMA IN HISTORIC AFDB DEAL

National Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang'ula

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has announced a landmark healthcare upgrade in Bungoma County, revealing that the African Development Bank (AfDB) will finance the construction of a Sh8 billion Level Six Referral and Teaching Hospital — a first for the entire Western Kenya region.

Speaking at the Bungoma KMTC grounds, Wetang’ula emphasized that the project will not rely on national exchequer funds, adding that the AfDB has already deposited the full amount with the National Treasury, signaling the project’s green light from Cabinet.

“This upgrade should not burden public coffers. The hospital will be fully funded by the African Development Bank,” said Wetang’ula.

The new facility will provide specialized medical services, putting it on par with other premier national health facilities such as Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Bungoma to Host Region’s First Level Six Hospital

The move marks a historic elevation of the Bungoma County Referral Hospital, a major stride for the region that has long lacked a comprehensive referral center.

“This is a game-changer for our region’s healthcare. It means direct government funding, more specialized care, and better medical outcomes for millions,” Wetang’ula noted.

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Bungoma Campus is also set to benefit from the project through new infrastructure and expanded training programmes to equip more healthcare professionals.

Land Transfers & Smart City Plan Underway

In another major reveal, Wetang’ula confirmed the transfer of 30 acres from the Bungoma Airstrip to the county government, following a directive by President William Ruto. This land will host the smart city project, which is part of a larger urban transformation plan.

President William Ruto received by Speaker Wetang'ula & Gov. Lusaka at a past event in Western Kenya

“A new airstrip is already being developed at Matulo in Webuye, and the Bungoma Sports Club and nearby institutions will be relocated to facilitate the hospital expansion,” he said.

The smart city is envisioned to anchor a modern, digitized urban ecosystem in Bungoma, with health, transport, and education infrastructure at its core.

Sh8.5 Billion Allocated to Roads, Matulo Airstrip Expansion

Wetang’ula also disclosed that Sh8.5 billion has been allocated for road projects across Bungoma, including plans to dual the Eldoret–Webuye–Malaba highway, a major corridor to Uganda and beyond.

The Matulo Airstrip, currently under construction, will be upgraded to international standards with a Sh100 million budget shared between the National Treasury and Bungoma County Government.

“These are not promises. These are deliverables already backed by financing and approvals,” he declared.

Bungoma Governor Lusaka Hails Project

Gov. Kenneth Lusaka

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka lauded the Speaker and President Ruto for delivering what he termed “the boldest transformation plan” for the county in decades.

In comparison, the Kakamega County Level Six Hospital, launched years ago, stalled due to underfunding and was eventually handed over to the Kenya Defence Forces — a fate Wetang’ula assured would not befall the Bungoma project.

As Bungoma rises to take its place as a healthcare, transport, and smart city hub, Wetang’ula’s influence continues to shape the county’s development trajectory, with eyes now firmly set on 2027 and beyond.
