Emmanuel Nyongesa, a final-year literature student at Egerton University who suffered a brutal attack by goons on the night of August 4, 2024, has been facing an uphill battle to recover from a broken lower left leg. The injury, which had been treated with a plaster cast for the past three months without improvement, required an urgent operation, an open reduction and internal fixation of the fractured tibia. The surgery budget, estimated at KSh 150,000, was needed by November 15, 2024. Nyongesa had been preparing for a community fundraiser, or harambee, set for the same date to cover his medical expenses.
To help rally support, Nyongesa created a WhatsApp group on October 30, 2024, inviting friends and family to contribute toward the surgery costs. The group was quickly joined by well-wishers, including Kimilili Constituency parliamentary hopeful Wakili Bryan Khaemba, who was set to serve as the chief guest for the fundraiser. As contributions began to trickle in, Nyongesa’s spirits lifted with hope for the upcoming event.
However, on the morning of October 31, joy and relief filled Nyongesa’s heart when a former high school classmate, John Wasilwa, stepped forward unexpectedly to cover the entire KSh 150,000 bill. Wasilwa and Nyongesa attended the same university, albeit in different programs, of which all are yet to graduate. The news came as a surprise to Nyongesa, who had been busy planning the fundraiser with the help of friends, including this writer, who was preparing posters and invitations for the event.

Upon receiving the invitation card draft for review, Nyongesa responded with excitement, informing me that the fundraiser was no longer needed. In disbelief, I asked for a screenshot as proof and even requested that Nyongesa withdraw a small amount, Kshs 100, from the new balance as confirmation, but to everyone’s joy, the funds were indeed real, and Nyongesa can finally proceed with his much-needed surgery.
In the WhatsApp group, messages of gratitude and blessings poured in for Wasilwa, who had lightened Nyongesa’s burden with his act of selflessness. As for the group members, they celebrated the generosity and kindness that had emerged unexpectedly from their community.
"Gratitude beyond words, my brother. May you never lack, and may the Almighty bless you richly. You’ve lifted a weight, and now I can smile with the hope that brighter days are near. Thank you deeply." ~~Tr. Emmanuel Nyongesa to John Wasilwa
This heartwarming gesture serves as a reminder of the enduring power of friendship and the beauty of stepping up for others in their time of need. Mr. Nyongesa is from Matili, an alumnus of Matili Friends Secondary School in Kimilili Ward, Kimilili Sub-County.
