Maria Wangare Kamunge, also known as Rish Kamunge, the director of Trustpine Travel Agency, has been arraigned in court over allegations of defrauding unsuspecting Kenyans in a fake job recruitment scheme targeting opportunities in Mauritius.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kamunge lured job seekers with promises of lucrative employment abroad, charging them between KSh 200,000 and KSh 400,000 each. However, victims later discovered that the promised jobs were nonexistent. Some even traveled to Mauritius, only to find themselves stranded at the airport without any support before being deported back to Kenya.
Investigations have so far revealed that a total of 43 victims sent a staggering KSh 12.9 million to the suspect. Following her arrest, Kamunge was presented in court, where the prosecution sought custodial orders for further investigations. She has since been remanded at Capital Hill Police Station as authorities continue to unravel the full extent of the scam.
The case is scheduled for mention today, March 28, 2025. Meanwhile, the DCI has urged any other victims of the fraudulent scheme to come forward and report the matter at Central Police Station, Nairobi.
The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to crack down on fraudulent recruitment agencies exploiting desperate job seekers. The DCI warns Kenyans to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of job opportunities before making any financial commitments.
