The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a fresh travel advisory, cautioning American citizens against visiting certain regions in the country due to heightened security concerns. The advisory, dated March 18, 2025, cites increased risks of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping.
According to the embassy, areas along the Kenya-Somalia border—including Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera—are flagged as high-risk due to persistent threats of terrorism. Tana River County and the coastal region north of Malindi were also included in the list, with warnings of potential attacks and kidnappings.
Beyond terrorism, the embassy raised concerns about banditry in parts of West Pokot and western Turkana County. Additionally, a 50-kilometer radius around the Ethiopian border was classified as a danger zone due to cross-border conflicts.
NAIROBI NOT SPARED
Even Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, was not exempt from the advisory. The embassy specifically warned against traveling to Eastleigh and Kibera, citing rampant violent crime, including armed carjackings, muggings, and home invasions. The advisory further noted that Kenyan security agencies may lack the capacity to respond swiftly to such incidents.
The warning comes at a time when the country is still investigating the murder of Scott Campbell, a British national whose body was discovered in Makueni after he went missing in February.
TERROR THREATS REMAIN A CONCERN
The U.S. government also warned of possible terrorist attacks on government buildings, places of worship, malls, and hotels, emphasizing that such incidents could happen “with little or no warning.”
In addition, U.S. citizens were advised to exercise caution when navigating key highways due to the potential for demonstrations, roadblocks, and industrial action, which could lead to severe traffic disruptions.
While travel advisories are a common diplomatic practice, this latest warning is likely to spark debate over Kenya’s security situation and its impact on tourism and foreign investments. The Kenyan government has yet to respond to the advisory.
