KRA EXTENDS TAX RETURN DEADLINE TO JULY 5, WAIVES PENALTIES AFTER SYSTEM GLITCHES

KRA's Public Notice

In a relief move for millions of Kenyan taxpayers, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has officially announced a waiver of penalties and interest on late filing of 2024 income tax returns, following widespread system interruptions experienced on June 30, 2025 — the original filing deadline.

Through a public notice issued Monday, KRA acknowledged the overwhelming last-minute turnout, which led to technical difficulties on its iTax platform, preventing many from filing on time.

“We appreciate all taxpayers for the overwhelming turnout in filing 2024 income tax returns. Due to system issues experienced on June 30, a waiver of penalties and interest has been granted,” the authority stated.

As a result, KRA has set a new filing deadline of July 5, 2025. Taxpayers now have an additional five days to finalize their returns and settle any due taxes.

KRA urged taxpayers to use the extra time to avoid unnecessary penalties, emphasizing that those who file and pay before the new date will not incur any additional charges.

The iTax system, accessible via http://itax.kra.go.ke, is expected to remain fully operational throughout this grace period, allowing taxpayers to submit returns conveniently online.

This move aligns with KRA’s commitment to fostering a tax-compliant culture while recognizing challenges faced by taxpayers, especially during peak filing periods.

Kenyan social media has been abuzz with the hashtags #KRAFilingSeason2025 and #JiondoleeJam, as taxpayers shared frustrations and celebrated the extension in equal measure.

KRA has advised taxpayers to take advantage of the waiver window immediately and avoid last-minute rushes that might strain the system further.
