Pelosi and Warren Condemn President Trump's Pursuit of Unconstitutional Third Term

Image
By EoK Team  Washington, D.C. ā€“ In a bold challenge to President Donald Trump's recent assertions about seeking a third term, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Senator Elizabeth Warren have voiced strong opposition, accusing the President of undermining the Constitution and neglecting the needs of American families. President Trump, who was inaugurated for a second, non-consecutive term on January 20, 2025, has sparked controversy by suggesting he may pursue a third term, despite the 22nd Amendment's clear two-term limit.  Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) responded emphatically, stating; "The president is not a king. The Constitution could not be clearer: No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice. Donald Trump would rather fantasize about a fictional third term than do anything to lower costs for working families." Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi echoed these sentiments, criticizing the administration's economic policies:  "Donald T...

Govt Declares April 31st a Public Holidayā€”But There's a Catch!

Image
By EOK News Team Kenyans were caught off guard on Tuesday morning after the government announced a brand-new public holiday to be observed on April 31st each year. Dubbed National Relaxation Day, the holiday was declared through a gazette notice aimed at giving hardworking Kenyans a day to unwind and reflect. "The Government of the Republic of Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to the welfare and well-being of its citizens. In appreciation of the industrious spirit of the Kenyan people, it is deemed expedient to declare an additional public holiday as a measure to enhance national productivity and socio-economic well-being," the notice read. A top government official confirmed that all businesses and government offices would be required to observe the holiday by shutting down operations for the day. However, the announcement quickly sparked confusion. Many Kenyans pointed out that April only has 30 days, raising the question: How can a holiday be scheduled on a non-exi...

Rutoā€™s Cabinet Circus. More Faces, Same Old Problems!

Image
By Franklin Mrata - Student, KCAU  Photo: President William Ruto addressing the nation  On March 20, 2025, President William Ruto announced new changes in his cabinet, hinting at further adjustments in due time. This marks his third cabinet reshuffle since he was sworn in on September 13, 2022. With most of these changes tied to new political alliances, one is pressed to wonder,  What exactly is His Excellency seeking? Be it new faces in the team, familiar ones, or old faces in different roles, the Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr said it best: The more things change, the more they stay the same. Because despite all the reassignments, the lamentations remain unchanged. Take, for instance, the Ministry of Health, where leadership adjustments have yet to bring tangible solutions. The rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA) continues to face hurdles, leaving many Kenyans questioning whether cabinet reshufles will yield any real impact. President William Ruto from ...

The Rise of Remote and Hybrid Work in Kenya

Image
By Maurine Ngari- Student KCAU  For years, the traditional work setup in Kenya required employees to report to the office by 8:30 a.m. and leave at 5:00 p.m. This routine often meant spending nearly ten hours at the workplace, with only brief breaks for tea and lunch. While some individuals thrive in this structured environment, others, especially younger professionals find rigid schedules and long hours stifling, preferring flexibility and autonomy in their careers. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 significantly altered work culture. With lockdowns and movement restrictions in place, many businesses shifted to remote work. Sectors such as IT, customer service, and marketing adapted quickly due to their digital nature. According to a 2021 report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), remote work increased by 35% during this period. The traditional 8-to-5 routine often leaves employees feeling overworked and stressed, exacerbated by long commutes and office politics. In con...

Phanice Khatundi, the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, and Fisheries, also serving as the acting CECM for Lands in Trans Nzoia County, has found herself at the center of controversy following remarks that have drawn sharp criticism from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) survivors and advocates. Khatundi reportedly insinuated that a female politician "feels like men" because she comes from a community known to practice FGM. Her comments have been widely condemned as insensitive and damaging, reinforcing harmful stereotypes and undermining the ongoing efforts to combat the practice and support survivors. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1AFv5uQKdK/ FGM is a deeply entrenched issue in Kenya, with a prevalence rate of 15% among women aged 15 to 49, according to the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kamunge lured job seekers with promises of lucrative employment abroad, charging them between KSh 200,000 and KSh 400,000 each. However, victims later discovered that the promised jobs were nonexistent. Some even traveled to Mauritius, only to find themselves stranded at the airport without any support before being deported back to Kenya. Is Public Participation in Kenya a Constitutional Formality or a Genuine Engagement?

Image
By Joan Cherop Ngetich, Student, Kabarak University. Image file: Gen Z protest after failed Public Participation- Design Joan Cherop Ngetich  Public participation is a fundamental pillar of democracy, designed to ensure that citizens have a voice in governance, policymaking, and legislative processes. In Kenya, it is a constitutional requirement, embedded in various laws that mandate citizen involvement in decision-making. However, while public participation appears to be a legal obligation , it often lacks meaningful engagement. Most of the time, it is reduced to just a bureaucratic formality, with little to no impact on final decisions. Despite countless public forums, memoranda, and consultations, the reality is that the opinions of citizens are rarely considered in key decisions, leading to growing disillusionment with the process. One of the clearest demonstrations of the failure of public participation was the Finance Bill 2024 . The government invited citizens to submit ...

The Hidden Political Tactics That Keep You Poor & Powerless

Image
Photo: Raila Odunga at a past opposition rally. Why You Struggle Financially And Who Benefits? Have you ever wondered why, no matter how hard you work, you still struggle financially? Why opportunities seem reserved for a select few while the majority remain trapped in a cycle of poverty? Itā€™s not by accident. Itā€™s by design. Politicians and powerful elites have mastered a system that ensures you remain poor, dependent, and powerlessā€”while they thrive. If you donā€™t understand these tactics, you will keep struggling, working hard for little, and being used when elections come. Letā€™s break it down. 1.  The Deliberate Cycle of Economic Hardship Tactic : Keeping the Economy Rigged Many politicians donā€™t want you to be financially independent. A poor population is an easily controlled population. They create fake job promises before elections, but after winning, the youth remain unemployed. They overtax small businesses while giving tax breaks to the wealthy. They ensure governme...

"TAWE MOVEMENT ONLY IN TRANS-NZOIA," KAKAMEGA GOVERNOR FERNANDES BARASA

Image
By EoK Editorial : Photo: Governor George Natembeya Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has dismissed the influence of the ā€˜ Tawe ā€™ movement beyond Trans Nzoia, arguing that it holds no significant weight in Western Kenya as a region and national politics. The movement, led by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya , has been perceived as a potential disruptor to established Western Kenya parties like ODM and Ford Kenya . However, Barasa insists that the recently signed political pact between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga is the real force that will consolidate the Luhya vote.   ā€œODM is very strong in Kakamega, Busia, and Vihiga. The soft handshake between Baba [Raila] and Ruto will bring Western together and shape future political alignments,ā€ Barasa said during an interview on TV47 on March 26 . While acknowledging the push for Luhya unity, Barasa emphasized that political diversity is inevitable. Photo: Governor Fernandes Barasa ā€œDemocracy allows different...

Lessons for NTSA and Kenyaā€™s Transport Sector from the Super Metro Saga

Image
Opinion by Risper Akinyi, Journalism and Digital Media student, KCA University. Photo Credits: The Star Kenya  The suspension of Super Metro's operator license by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on March 12, 2025, following the tragic death of Gilbert Thuo Kimani, sparked national debate on public transport safety and regulation. The incident, in which Kimani allegedly fell from a moving bus after a dispute with a conductor, led to NTSA halting Super Metroā€™s operations, citing the need for compliance with PSV regulations. However, following legal processes, the suspension has since been lifted, allowing the fleet to resume operations. This event has exposed deeper concerns within Kenyaā€™s transport sector, including selective enforcement of regulations, commuter safety, and the need for long-term structural reforms. While NTSAā€™s intervention was aimed at ensuring accountability, questions remain about whether enforcement is applied fairly across all PSV operators ...

Tuberculosis Remains the Worldā€™s Deadliest Infectious Disease: WHO

Image
By EoK Editorial: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be the leading infectious disease killer worldwide, with 1.25 million deaths recorded in 2023, according to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite being preventable and curable, TB remains a significant public health crisis, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, including Kenya. The Silent Threat of TB WHO estimates that a quarter of the global population is infected with TB bacteria, but most people do not develop the active disease. TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a bacterium that mainly affects the lungs and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or spits. Common symptoms include: šŸŸ  Persistent cough lasting more than two weeks šŸŸ  Fever and night sweats šŸŸ  Unexplained weight loss šŸŸ  Fatigue and chest pain If left untreated, TB can be fatal. However, early diagnosis and consistent treatment with antibiotics can cure the disease and prevent its spread. Progre...

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT RUTO, KENYANS NEED ANSWERS.

Image
By Muthoni Shallom, Student, KCAU  Photo: President William Ruto Dear Mr. President, Kenyans Need Answers, Not Empty Promises. Dear Mr. President, A journalist as per say is the light of the community, I choose to be one to convey the message herewith.  To start with, when you launched the Hustler Fund, you promised to empower ordinary Kenyans, the famous mama mbogas and the boda boda riders, the jobless youth with big dreams but limited means. You spoke with conviction. You painted a picture of a government that understood the struggles of its people and was ready to walk with them. But fast forward to today, and that promise feels distant. Many of the people you spoke for are still hungry, still unemployed, still drowning in hopelessness. Whatā€™s even more puzzling is the recent revelation that the famous Hustler fund has allocated money and has savings for unborn children, billions of shillings for those born between July 2024 to 2073, really Mr. President? How did they regi...

ā€œBungomaā€™s Stalled Dreams, " Brendah Okumu, "Only Wangamati Can Fix the Mess in 2027ā€

Image
By EoK Editorial: A conversation with Former Governor, Wafula Wangamati's supporter. Photo: Former Governor, Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati, Bungoma. As the 2027 elections draw closer, political temperatures in Bungoma County are rising. Among those championing the return of former Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati is a vocal supporter, Brendah Okumu, who ails from Maraka Ward of Webuye East Constituency. Brendah strongly believes that Wangamati remains the best choice for Bungomaā€™s leadership. In a passionate statement, Brendah argued that Bungoma County has stagnated since Wangamati left office, with key projects either stalling or being abandoned altogether. She describes Wangamati as a leader with a vision for the countyā€™s development, contrasting his tenure with the current leadership, which she claims has failed to sustain the momentum. Wangamatiā€™s Legacy, A Record of Development During his tenure as Bungomaā€™s second governor from 2017 to 2022, Governor Wangamati initiated sever...

To Restore Trust in IEBC, Appointments to the Commission Must Be Depoliticized.

Image
By Clare Chepkurui Biy: Student, Kabarak University   Image: IEBC 001 By Clare Chepkurui Biy_ Kabarak University  Kenyaā€™s electoral system has long struggled with credibility issues, as a youth, it pains me when my country struggles every after election while at the heart of this challenge lies the politicization of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission ( IEBC ) appointments. The current process, where both the government and opposition nominate individuals for consideration as commissioners, creates a perception of bias.  As it stands, whichever political side that forwards a nominee and eventually become the IEBC Chairperson after consideration by the select committee according to our political environment are the "winners" while the opposing side will always question their neutrality. This erodes public trust in the commission and weakens the credibility of our electoral processes no matter how credible or not future elections will be. Political Influen...

From Struggles to Success: Violetā€™s Journey of Resilience and Triumph

Image
Inspirational Monday  Photo: Ola Midika (Facebook) In the heart of Vihiga County, deep in Kenyaā€™s Western Region, a young girl dared to dream beyond her circumstances. Born into financial hardship, Violetā€™s journey was marked by struggles that could have easily broken her spirit. But instead, they shaped her into a woman of resilience, determination, and unshakable faith. From an early age, Violet understood that education was her greatest weapon. She studied relentlessly, even when resources were scarce. Electricity was unreliable, and many nights were spent reading under candlelight. School fees posed a constant challenge, but she refused to let that stand in her way. She took on small jobs, sought scholarships, and did whatever it took to remain in school. Her ambition only grew stronger after high school. University felt like a distant dream, one that seemed almost impossible. But giving up was never an option. She worked tirelessly, balancing part-time jobs with her studies, a...
